The axe is made from D2 high carbon steel and comes with a leather sheath.
D2 is a high carbon and high chromium steel, which makes it stronger than normal stainless steel and has better edge retention. It is often the chosen form of steel by high-end chefs for this reason.
D2 steel being high chromium and is almost stainless but less so than full stainless steel and as such does require a little more care than 100% stainless steel, a food-grade mineral oil is ideal however there are many ways to look after high carbon steel and if you’re interested a quick Google search will provide more details.
Sometimes when opening the package there may be some orange spots that look like rust, but don’t worry these are just marks on the grease paper wrapping the blade.
