Just about everything the bees produce have useful uses, beeswax can be used for all sorts of things like lip balm, furniture polish, candles, beeswax wraps and more.

Manuka Honey

Manuka honey is collected by bees foraging the nectar and pollen from flowers of the Leptospermum scoparium, which is a tea tree native to Australia and New Zealand.

Manuka honey is a medicinal product that is antibacterial. The chemical which is present in manuka honey that gives it it’s medicinal properties is methylglyoxal which is abbreviated to MGO.  The higher the MGO the more potent the antibacterial effects are and this is used to rate the grade of manuka.

Manuka honey usually starts at 30 MGO, which is a multi-floral mix of manuka and other flowers and goes up to a maximum of around 1000. The highest-rated can easily fetch up to $500 per kg.

There is only a limited window during the year that the manuka bush is in flower and this is why it is so expensive.
